What Happens After You File a MOHRE Complaint? Step-by-Step Timeline
You filed. Now what? Here's exactly what happens, in order, with the timing the Reddit threads usually get wrong.
Stage 1 — Filing (Day 0)
You submit via the MOHRE app, website, hotline (80060), or at a Tasheel centre. You receive a case reference number. MOHRE acknowledges receipt the same or next working day.
Stage 2 — Employer Notice (Days 1–3)
MOHRE sends the employer a formal notice of the complaint with a request to respond. The employer sees:
- Your name and contract reference
- The substance of the complaint
- The amount in dispute, if applicable
- A response window — usually 3 working days
Stage 3 — Settlement Attempt (Days 3–14)
MOHRE assigns a labour officer who contacts both sides. The officer attempts to broker a settlement:
- Phone or video call with you
- Separate call with the employer
- If both sides agree on a number, a settlement statement is signed (electronic signatures accepted)
- Payment must follow within an agreed window — typically days, not weeks
Most straightforward cases (delayed salary, end-of-service balance) settle here.
Stage 4 — Labour Court Referral (Day 14+ if unresolved)
If the employer refuses to settle or fails to respond, MOHRE issues a referral to the labour court. You receive a referral document — keep it. This is your entry ticket to court.
- First hearing: typically scheduled within a few working days of referral
- Court fees: waived for claims under AED 100,000
- Hearings: usually 1–2 sessions for clear cases; complex cases run longer
- Rulings: enforceable; you can move directly to wage recovery against the employer's assets if they refuse to pay
Stage 5 — Resolution and Enforcement
Once a settlement or court ruling is in place, the employer pays. If they refuse or vanish, you can request the court's enforcement department to seize assets, freeze bank accounts, or block the employer from issuing new visas.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't withdraw the complaint after the employer makes vague verbal promises. Only withdraw once payment is in your account.
- Don't accept "we'll pay you when you leave the country." This is a classic delay tactic; once you leave it's much harder to enforce.
- Don't sign a "final settlement" form before payment clears. Even if you signed, you can still dispute later — but it makes the case harder.
