Golden Visa for Employees: The AED 30,000 Salary Route Explained [2026]

September 23, 2026 · 8 min read

For many salaried expats, the skilled professional route is the realistic path to a UAE Golden Visa. You do not need to buy property or start a company. You need the right salary, the right qualification and the right job classification. Here is what official sources say, and what they leave unclear.

Check your salary route

Gulf Pilot's free eligibility checker tests the salary route alongside property, business and retirement options.

The four requirements

The April 2022 Cabinet reform and GDRFA Dubai set out the same four conditions:

  1. MOHRE occupational level 1 or 2. Your job must be classified at the first or second level by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. You can see your registered classification in the MOHRE app.
  2. A bachelor's degree or higher. Degrees obtained outside the UAE generally need attestation.
  3. A valid UAE employment contract.
  4. A monthly salary of at least AED 30,000.

Specialists in healthcare, education and industrial or technology fields follow similar criteria (a bachelor's degree, at least AED 30,000 a month and a valid professional licence).

Basic salary or total package?

This is the question employees ask most, and the honest answer is that the official pages we reviewed say "monthly salary" without defining it. Many UAE employment packages split pay into a low basic salary plus housing and transport allowances. If your basic is AED 18,000 and your total package is AED 32,000, get a clear answer from ICP or GDRFA using your salary certificate before you apply or plan a move around it.

The split matters beyond the visa, too. End-of-service gratuity under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 is calculated on basic salary only. If you are negotiating an offer, see our guide to why a low basic salary costs you gratuity, and run the numbers with our free gratuity calculator.

What the Golden Visa changes about your job

  • You sponsor yourself. A standard work residence is tied to your employer. The Golden Visa is not, which gives you more freedom to change jobs.
  • Your labour rights stay the same. Your employment is still governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (or DIFC and ADGM rules if you work there): notice periods, gratuity, leave and the new rule under Ministerial Resolution 340/2026 that wages are due on the 1st of each month.
  • Renewal requires meeting the conditions again. GDRFA says the permit is extended "if the same conditions are met". No official page we found lists specific cancellation grounds, so we do not speculate about what happens mid-term if your salary drops or you leave your job.

Where to apply

Apply through ICP's smart services or the UAEICP app, or in Dubai through GDRFA smart services or an AMER centre. Budget for the ICP entry permit (AED 300 in official fees), GDRFA residence permit fees, medical fitness, Emirates ID and health insurance for you and any family members you sponsor.

Common reasons applications stall

  • A job title that MOHRE classifies below level 2, even if the role is senior in practice.
  • A degree that has not been attested.
  • Uncertainty over whether the salary threshold refers to basic or total pay.
